The Greys

From time to time (okay, quite frequently) we talk about the Easter Eggs that we embed into each of our comics. These can take various forms: little bits of code that run if you load the SVG file into a suitable web browser; hidden layers or tiny details for you to zoom into if you load the file into Inkscape; barcodes that, if you can find and decode them, will lead you to hidden pages on our website. Most common of all, however, are extra panels which enhance, subvert or extend the main comic, and which are best found by loading the SVG file into Inkscape and panning around a bit.

This comic is, or rather was, one of those Easter Eggs. It was originally an addendum to the previous strip, but we decided to split it out into a comic all of its own. On the one hand this is an easy way for us to make two strips from one; on the other hand it then requires us to create two new Easter Eggs, so ends up being double the work anyway.

This isn’t the first time we’ve split an Easter Egg out into its own strip, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. If nothing else it helps to demonstrate that our Easter Eggs are as fundamental a part of our comics as the main strip – and are sometimes substantial enough to stand on their own as separate posts. So if you’ve never gone hunting for Easter Eggs in our comics, give it a go, you might be surprised at just how involved some of them are.
